They stare down at the wrecked BMW. 232 INT. CAR PARK STAIRS Bond comes down the stairs. He folds shut the cell phone, slips it into his pocket, and exits to: 233 EXT. CITY STREET - OUTSIDE CAR PARK - DAY Chaos on the street as police and on-lookers rush to the accident. An AVIS WOMAN is among them. Bond walks by, takes his RENTAL AGREEMENT from his jacket, and hands it to her. BOND . . . I left the keys in the car. 234-248 OMITTED 248A EXT. ROOFTOP ACROSS FROM THE HOTEL - DAY Stamper watches Bond stroll away, but there's nothing he can do about it from way back here. None of his men seem to answer their walkie-talkies anymore. DISSOLVE TO: 248B EXT. USAF BASE - OKINAWA, JAPAN - DAY A USAF helicopter lands on a remote area of the base. Bond gets out, carrying the red box, wearing his Royal Navy Uniform. A squad of AIR FORCE MPs salute. Bond returns the salute, then hears - WADE Yo! Jimbo! Bond turns to see his old friend, JACK WADE, who is dressed in his usual eccentric gear. Bond delivers their now traditional greeting: BOND Wade. What the hell are you doing here? WADE Jimbo - The World is My Office. (Beat) Step this way. They stride towards an ARMORED CAR where MP's are unloading a large cart. BOND Did Q bring you up to date on everything? WADE (A wink and knowing nod) You understand, of course, that - officially - Uncle Sam is completely neutral in this turkey shoot? BOND . . . And unofficially? WADE We have no interest in seeing World War Three . . . Unless we start it. They've arrived at the cart, which holds a pile of high tech equipment. Wade calls out to the Group by the cart. WADE Ten-hut! The uniformed men spring to attention. Wade dismisses the MP's with a wave of his hand, then introduces Dr. DAVE GREENWALT - the techie who runs the equipment. WADE This is Doctor Greenwalt the Air Force GPS expert. Show him what you got. Bond takes out the encoder. DR. GREENWALT reacts with surprise. DR. GREENWALT Jesus! The missing GPS encoder!! How the hell did you get that? BOND I picked it up this morning in Hamburg. Could it have been used to send a ship off course? Bond hands it to him. GREENWALT examines it gingerly, explaining: DR. GREENWALT (A little freaked out) You mean, like the Devonshire? WADE Son - I never heard the word "Devonshire" mentioned here. Did you? DR. GREENWALT (Spooked) No. WADE Good. So answer the man's question. DR. GREENWALT Well . . . In theory, if you altered the timing chip, you could slowly send a ship off course . . . BOND Kind of like putting a magnet next to a compass? DR. GREENWALT Exactly. BOND Why don't you check it out? DR. GREENWALT slides Bond's encoder into a slot on the console, directly beneath another encoder. We cut to a CLOSE-UP, of the equipment showing two overlapping circles, but they don't match exactly. DR. GREENWALT Look: Someone's tampered with your encoder. BOND If we had the Devonshire's last time and position, could you figure out exactly where she sank? DR. GREENWALT Sure. BOND Wade? I have a small favor to ask. Wade smiles, with a twinkle in his eye. 248C EXT. USAF C-130 - DAY The plane fights for altitude in the thin air very close to its maximum ceiling. 248D INT. U.S.A.F. C-130 - DAY Bond is in diving gear, with fins strapped to his chest, a parachute on his back, and bulky devices an altimeter and a GPS receiver on each wrist. An AIR FORCE MASTER SERGEANT recheck's Bond's equipment. Wade and DR. GREENWALT hover around the GPS equipment; Wade has a golf club in his hand. WADE (To Bond) Borrowed the plane from an ex-president. He was using it for a golfing trip to Singapore. DR. GREENWALT (To pilot, over intercom) Change heading to 164. (To Bond) We're getting close. Maybe two minutes. The Jump Sergeant helps Bond to his feet. They go to the rear door. USAF MASTER SGT. We're using the commercial air corridor - like a regular flight - to Avoid suspicion. You bail out at twenty-nine thousand feet. When You hit the air out there, it's fifty-seven degrees below zero. You free fall for five miles - and use the oxygen, or you'll die of asphyxiation. Bond nods, in his suit. WADE Sounds like my first marriage. The jump Sergeant cuts Bond with a glance. Continues: USAF MASTER SERGEANT Next - after the free fall - you pop the chute at 200 feet, under the Chinese radar. You're going to be flying at over 200 miles an hour - so it's going to snap your head back like a cantaloupe. Be careful not to crack your skull open on the tanks. BOND I'll keep that in mind. WADE Sounds like an awful lot to save the world, Jimbo. BOND There's no choice. I have to prove that ship was deliberately set off course. PILOT (O.S.) One minute to jump site! BOND Is the pick up set? WADE Done. After the dive, you turn on your beacon, and the extraction team will get you after dark. BOND (To the Jump Sergeant) Any other advise? USAF MASTER SGT. Yeah, one last thing: When you hit the water, don't forget to cut away the chute. Ninety percent of the people who get killed doing a hi-lo jump get tangled up in the chute and drown. Got it? BOND ....It's a big ocean. I can't miss. The Jump Sergeant smile, thumps Bond on the back. USAF MASTER SGT. When that door opens - (Snaps his fingers) You're out. Wade and Bond share a look. WADE Definitely sounds like my first marriage. Ready? BOND ...The only reason I stay in this job is for the health insurance. As they move to the jump door - PILOT (O.S.) Fifteen seconds! WADE (on intercom to pilot) Let's pop the cork - We hear the sound of air rushing into the cabin. PILOT (O.S.) Starting decompression. Ten seconds from jump sight. Nine . . . Eight . . . (He continues the countdown, under:) DR. GREENWALT (panicked) Wait! Stop him! Those islands! He's not jumping into China. It's VIETNAM! USAF MASTER SGT. (appalled) Vietnam???? WADE (Insanely delighted) Vietnam? DR. GREENWALT Does he have any U.S. government markings on him?!?! USAF MASTER SGT ...Only the tanks. The wet suit. The parachute - PILOT (O.S.) Five - Four - DR. GREENWALT If they catch him, it's going to be the Vietnam war, part two! Wade considers this for a moment, brightening: WADE . . . Maybe this time, We'll win. And with this, he presses a button opening the jump door. The plane fills with wind. Wade casually turns around - just in time to see Bond dive out of the plane. WADE He didn't even say good-bye. 249 EXT. MESOSPHERE - DAY Bond holds his arms crossed over his chest, dropping straight down through the thin air . . . 250 BOND'S WRIST ALTIMETER winds toward zero like a watch zipping backwards through time. 251 BOND plummets faster and faster . . . 252 BOND'S GPS TRACKING DEVICE A cross hair target, with a flashing red dot jittering far from its center. 253 BOND begins to maneuver . . . 254 THE FLASHING RED DOT ON THE GPS TRACKING DEVICE drifts toward the center of the cross hairs as -
